Biocycler remediates demolition waste to make new building materials for Earth and beyond

Buildings are responsible for 40% of the world’s carbon emissions with over 500 million tons of construction and demolition waste enter landfills each year in the US alone.

Redhouse studio was founded in 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio by Christopher Maurer to engage in all facets of architecture, from research and innovation in low impact material technologies, to design and fabrication, to building commissioning and net-zero retrofits.

Working in limited-resource-environments has inspired Christopher in his practice to reduce material inputs and leverage the building process to make maximum positive impact. In research, he is working with leading researchers at NASA and MIT to develop and promote new bio-materials.

Redhouse is engaged in several projects that use mycelium. Biocycler in Cleveland recycles and remediates demolition waste to make new building materials, BioFAB with MIT and Standard Bank in Windhoek Namibia that uses waste from mushroom farming to make materials for building, and BioHAB with NASA that proposes buildings that can grow themselves off planet with the aid on rovers.

Biocycling effectively leverages the same microorganisms to reconstitute the demolition materials and to remediate (reduce pollutants) these same materials as they metabolize.

Chris believes "this decade will see the first fully recycled house, refugee camps that are provided food, jobs, and shelter from the same process, and shelters on the Moon that have grown themselves."
