  • Lucknow-based Arboreal Bioinnovations has closed a $24.2M Series A round led by EAAA Alternatives and Omnivore to expand manufacturing and R&D across its functional ingredient portfolio.

  • The company supplies yeast protein under its Bioprot label to over 1,100 consumer and nutraceutical brands, with its ingredients underpinning more than 300 product launches in the past 18 months.

  • The raise positions Arboreal to capitalise on India's rapidly growing functional food market, where consumer demand for high-protein, low-sugar products is accelerating alongside the country's nascent GLP-1 weight-loss drug boom.

A Lucknow Lab With National Reach

Founded in 2018 by CEO Swati Pandey and COO Manish Chauhan, Arboreal Bioinnovations operates at the less visible but commercially critical layer of the food industry: ingredient supply. Rather than selling finished products to consumers, it engineers the components that other brands formulate into their products. The company's technology platform combines ingredient engineering, process research and development, formulation science, and precision manufacturing across five distinct ingredient lines.

Its Bioprot label supplies yeast protein, a single-cell protein derived from yeast fermentation, to brands including SuperYou, Cosmix, and Yoga Bar. Its Evo line is developing plant-based protein isolates designed for neutral taste and smooth texture. Pyure covers zero- and low-calorie sweeteners such as monkfruit, stevia, and erythritol. Cococo is a cacao-derived ingredient range, while Ori is described as India's first marine collagen peptide ingredient at a molecular weight of 1,000 Daltons. Further products in development include OptiWhey, an optimised whey protein solution, and fibre-based ingredients targeting gut wellness, sugar reduction, and healthy ageing.

The Series A round, totalling ₹23 crore ($24.2M), was led by EAAA Alternatives and Omnivore, with continued participation from Rainmatter by Zerodha, an existing shareholder. Arboreal intends to use the capital to expand manufacturing capacity, deepen its R&D activities, and accelerate commercialisation of its next-generation portfolio.

The Market Pull Behind the Round

Investor enthusiasm reflects a broader structural shift in Indian consumer behaviour. A 2025 PwC survey found that 38% of Indian consumers rank high nutritional value among their top three factors when making food purchases, and more than a fifth said superior health benefits could convince them to switch brands. India currently ranks third globally for the share of functional food purchases, with nearly 90% of citizens buying in the category.

Demand for protein, in particular, is intensifying. Polling cited by the source indicates that 37% of Indian consumers want to add more plant protein to their diets, with plant-based protein sources attracting greater interest than animal-based ones among a growing share of the population. Gen Z, which accounts for 27% of India's population and controls 35% of consumption spending, is a key driver: 82% of this cohort consider protein consumption important, and 91% are open to plant-based foods, according to an Ipsos survey.

Ashish Agarwal, private equity managing director at EAAA, specifically highlighted Arboreal's yeast protein products as the focus of the firm's long-term growth expectations, linking the opportunity partly to India's expanding GLP-1 market. The use of semaglutide and related weight-loss medications has grown sharply in India, with the market rising from $16M in 2021 to nearly $100M, and analysts expect more than 50 branded semaglutide products to enter the country this year. High-protein, functional foods are frequently positioned as complementary to GLP-1 regimens, creating downstream demand for ingredients like those Arboreal supplies.

Ambitions Beyond the Domestic Market

Arboreal's co-founders have framed the round in explicitly global terms. Pandey described the fundraise as validation for "building clean, science-led solutions" with "innovation originating in India and reaching consumers globally." Chauhan pointed to the company's shift from building intellectual property to enabling "big shifts across categories through ingredient-first innovation."

The company's domestic traction is already notable: SuperYou's yeast protein powder, made with Bioprot, is currently listed at every Starbucks store in India. Arboreal's broader claim, that its ingredients have powered over 300 product launches across more than 1,100 manufacturers in 18 months, will need independent verification as it seeks to attract international partners. For now, the $24.2M gives the Lucknow-based startup meaningful runway to test whether India-origin functional ingredients can find a global audience.
