Functional mushrooms are attracting growing interest across supplements, foods, drinks and ingredient supply. But for many brands, the hardest questions come before launch: which commercial route fits the project, what material is actually needed, what evidence should suppliers provide, and can the product be positioned responsibly in Europe?

MUSHEEZ® Publishes New Launch Guide for Functional Mushroom Brands and Prepares SOLVIQA™ for Fi Europe

Based on five years of practical experience helping brands, buyers, food and beverage developers, resellers and distributors across 30 European countries, the guide highlights the top five mistakes MUSHEEZ® most often sees in functional mushroom product projects. These are the recurring early errors that can slow down launches, create supplier confusion, weaken documentation, complicate formulation or expose brands to unnecessary claims and compliance risk.

Rather than giving readers a technical manual, the guide turns those mistakes into a practical readiness pathway for companies planning to launch, extend, replace or reposition a functional mushroom product range. It helps readers think through the key commercial and technical questions before they approach suppliers: route, product and supply format, material type, risk checks, supplier evidence, formulation reality, packaging responsibilities, claims and commercial viability.

“Many enquiries start with a species name, but that is rarely enough,” says Robin Gurney, founder of Natural Chaga OÜ / MUSHEEZ®. “A Lion’s Mane powder for capsules, a soluble ingredient for drinks, a private label liquid extract and a bulk ingredient project all raise different questions. The route, material, documentation, claims position and numbers have to work together.”

The guide is also intended to help early-stage founders prepare better questions before approaching suppliers for prices, samples or product-development support. MUSHEEZ® works with registered companies that are ready to trade, but says many early enquiries would benefit from clearer planning before supplier discussions begin.

Research Review Published on Zenodo After IMMC13 Invitation

The new launch guide follows another recent MUSHEEZ® publication: an open-access research review published on Zenodo, Reporting Gaps in Human Medicinal Mushroom Studies: Implications for Interpretation, Formulation, and Real-World Use.

The review examines human studies involving Lion’s Mane and Reishi and argues that medicinal mushroom research often reports dosage more clearly than the actual mushroom material tested. As NutraIngredients reported, the review identified reporting gaps around intervention description, material characterisation and metabolite profiling, making it harder to translate clinical literature into real-world product development.

Gurney was invited to present the research at the 13th International Medicinal Mushroom Conference (IMMC13), but could not make the conference schedule work. Instead, MUSHEEZ® decided to publish the review openly so that researchers, brands and formulators could access and discuss the framework sooner.

The review has already received positive feedback from industry leaders, particularly around its practical message: dose alone is not enough. For responsible product development, brands also need to understand species identity, fungal part, processing, extraction, carrier use, batch integrity and compounds of interest.

“The more we looked, the clearer it became that the dose number is only one part of the story,” says Gurney. “If studies do not clearly report what the material actually was, it becomes much harder for brands, researchers and formulators to interpret the results responsibly.”

SOLVIQA™ to Launch at Fi Europe

MUSHEEZ® is also preparing to launch SOLVIQA™, its new range of soluble functional mushroom ingredient systems for food and beverage applications. The range has been developed for companies working with drink powders, ready-to-drink products, hot drinks and other food or beverage concepts where taste, colour, sediment, dispersion and process sensitivity matter. Instead of treating mushroom extracts as generic powders, SOLVIQA™ is intended to support more realistic formulation work in real food and drink matrices.

MUSHEEZ® plans to introduce the SOLVIQA™ range at Fi Europe 2026, taking place at Messe Frankfurt from 17–19 November. Together, the new guide, the Zenodo review and the SOLVIQA™ launch point to the same direction for the functional mushroom category: less hype, clearer materials, better documentation, more realistic formulation testing and more responsible positioning.
