As the demand for functional and health-focused foods grows in the UK, Marks & Spencer (M&S) has stepped up with two innovative product lines designed to cater to this wellness-conscious audience. The new Brain Food range and Yay! Mushrooms line not only reflect consumer preferences but also highlight the retailer’s commitment to delivering science-backed, nutritious options.

Brain Food: Science-Driven Nutrition
The Brain Food range is the result of M&S’s collaboration with the British Nutrition Foundation. Drawing on research into the six nutrients essential for cognitive health—omega-3 (DHA), iron, iodine, folate, zinc, and vitamin B12—this line aims to promote better brain function and overall well-being. The timing couldn’t be better, as global searches for ‘brain health’ surged in the past year, reflecting heightened consumer interest.
The range includes 13 thoughtfully designed products, such as a salmon salad, mixed berry bars, and a kefir shot. Each item contains at least two of the six brain health nutrients and proudly carries the retailer’s Eat Well badge, a mark of M&S’s rigorous nutritional standards. By combining scientific expertise with culinary appeal, the Brain Food line sets a new benchmark for functional foods in the UK market.
Yay! Mushrooms: Functional Drinks for Mind and Body
M&S’s Yay! Mushrooms range taps into the growing popularity of functional mushrooms, known for their health-enhancing properties. Featuring nine beverages, the range includes innovative offerings like the Vanilla Latte with Lion’s Mane and the AM and PM Shot Duo. The AM shot pairs lion’s mane mushroom with ginger, lime, and matcha for an energising start to the day, while the PM shot blends cherry, coconut, chamomile, and reishi mushroom to promote relaxation.
Lion’s mane, often dubbed the ‘smart mushroom,’ is celebrated for its cognitive-enhancing abilities and potential to reduce brain fog, while reishi mushrooms are known for their immune-boosting properties. To ensure the highest quality and efficacy, M&S partnered with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to source premium mushroom powders for the range.
A Strategic Move in Wellness Retail
By launching the Brain Food and Yay! Mushrooms lines, M&S is positioning itself at the forefront of the health food revolution. These products not only meet the rising demand for functional foods but also underscore the importance of scientific collaboration and ingredient transparency. With these launches, the retailer reinforces its reputation as a leader in innovation and health-conscious offerings.
